How to Make Your Spray Tan Last Longer
Share
If your spray tan fades unevenly or looks patchy by day five, it usually is not the spray tan solution or your spray tan artist’s application.
It is what happened before the appointment or what happened after.
A spray tan develops in the outermost layer of your skin. That layer sheds naturally. To make a spray tan last longer, the goal is not to stop shedding. The goal is to control how evenly and how quickly it happens.
The difference between a tan that fades beautifully and one that looks blotchy often comes down to preparation and daily care.
Before Your Spray Tan: Prep Matters
The best prep for a spray tan is a proper exfoliating mitt.
A tan exfoliating mitt removes dead skin and dry buildup without leaving behind oils or residue. It creates a smooth, clean surface so the solution can develop evenly.
What is not ideal before a spray tan?
Oil-based scrubs.
Oil residue left on the skin can interfere with even development and create barrier spots.
Instead:
- Use an exfoliating mitt 24 hours before your appointment
- Avoid heavy moisturizers the day of your tan
- Arrive with clean, dry skin
Good prep sets the stage. But what you do after matters just as much.
After Your Spray Tan: Protect the Top Layer
Most fading starts in the shower.
Long, hot showers and aggressive cleansing speed up shedding. Many traditional body washes are designed to deeply cleanse and remove oil. That can unintentionally shorten the life of your tan.
That is why we created our pH balanced body wash to be tan-friendly.

Bronze & Beyond was built specifically for spray tan clients who want their results to last. Same commitment to simple, effective body care. Plus products intentionally designed for tanning routines.
Our pH Balanced Body Wash is spray tan safe. It cleanses without accelerating exfoliation, helping your color last longer and fade more evenly.
Small changes help:
- Use lukewarm water
- Wash gently with your hands
- Pat dry instead of rubbing
Daily habits matter more than people think.
Moisture, Hydration, and Strategic Color Support
Dry skin sheds unevenly. Uneven shedding leads to patchiness.
That is why daily moisture matters.
Hydrating Body Lotion is our everyday moisturizer formulated with spray tan clients in mind. It does not contain DHA.
It focuses on hydration and supporting the skin barrier so your tan fades evenly.
Tan Extend Lotion contains a small amount of DHA, the ingredient that creates color in a spray tan. Used daily after your first rinse, it helps subtly support depth while maintaining moisture. It is not a replacement for a spray tan. It is a maintenance product designed to extend the look of your results. It can also function as a buildable gradual tan lotion.
Consistency is key. Apply lotion daily, focusing on elbows, knees, and ankles where dryness shows first.
Why Your Face and Hands Fade First
Your face and hands fade faster than your body. They are more exposed, washed more often, and your face may be exposed to skincare actives that are great for your skin but not ideal for maintaining a tan.
That is where Tan Water becomes especially useful.
Lightweight and ideal for refreshing facial color a few days after your spray tan when the face begins to lighten. We formulated our Tan Water with hyaluronic acid, aloe, and provitamin B5 to support hydration while delivering a natural-looking boost of color.
Apply to clean, dry skin. Blend evenly. Wash your hands afterward.
Used strategically, Tan Water keeps your overall result looking cohesive without over-layering products.
Why Darker Tans Look Patchy Faster
Darker tans do not necessarily fade faster.
They show fading more clearly.
When the contrast between your spray tan and your natural skin tone is greater, even small areas of dryness or uneven shedding become more noticeable. That is why darker results require more consistent daily care.
It is not about choosing lighter or darker. It is about matching your routine to your result.
When to Exfoliate Again
Once your tan has started to fade and you are ready for full removal, that is when exfoliation comes back in.
Using an exfoliating mitt at the end of your tan cycle helps lift remaining color so it fades evenly and prepares your skin for your next appointment.
The full routine looks like this:
- Prep with a mitt.
- Maintain with pH Balancing Body Wash and Hydrating Body Lotion or Tan Extend Lotion.
- Refresh color on face and hands with Tan Water as needed.
- Exfoliate again when you are ready to fully remove remaining color.
Routine equals results.
When your products are designed to support your spray tan instead of working against it, your glow lasts longer, fades smoother, and looks intentional from start to finish.
