Why Custom Spray Tans Work Better for Curves, Mature Skin and Really Just About Any Body

Spray tanning has become incredibly popular over the last decade. For most people considering a spray tan, the first decision is simple. Do you step into a booth, or do you book a custom spray tan?

Booths seem appealing because they’re quick and private. But when it comes to the final result, custom spray tans consistently look better. That difference becomes even more noticeable for mature skin and for bodies that don’t fit the size template most spray booths were designed around.

A booth uses a fixed spray pattern. A custom spray tan uses technique. That distinction matters.

Mature Skin Requires a More Intentional Application

Skin changes as we age. It tends to become drier and thinner, and the surface texture becomes less uniform over time. Areas like elbows, knees, and hands can absorb more color than the surrounding skin. Fine lines can also collect extra product.

A fixed spray pattern cannot account for those differences.

When I apply a custom spray tan, I can.

Custom application allows me to use lighter passes where skin tends to absorb more color and blend more carefully in areas where texture or wrinkles could cause uneven development.

These adjustments are subtle, but they make a noticeable difference in how smooth and natural the tan looks.

Body Shape Matters More Than People Realize

Body shape also affects the application of a booth spray tan.

Booths operate with predetermined spray patterns and assume a specific standing position. In reality, bodies vary widely in shape, proportions, and how skin naturally folds or touches.

Those differences can lead to uneven coverage when the spray pattern does not reach certain areas consistently. Places where skin overlaps or curves away from the spray path may receive less solution, while other areas may collect more.

When I apply a custom spray tan, I can adjust spray distance, angle, and movement to work with the body rather than around a fixed pattern. I can guide small changes in positioning during the appointment to make sure every area gets even coverage.

The result is a tan that looks balanced instead of uneven.

Color Should Be Matched to the Person

Another advantage of custom spray tanning is color selection.

Booth systems typically offer a limited number of preset options. Those settings are designed to work for a wide range of people, but they are not tailored to an individual’s skin tone or undertones.

When someone comes in for a custom spray tan, I start with a consultation. I look at natural skin tone, undertones, and how deep the client wants the color to develop. Then I choose the solution and application approach that will work best for that person.

For instance, I may use a tan solution with a green bronzer to offset strong red or pink undertones to create a beautiful brown natural looking tan.

That step alone prevents many of the results people worry about when they think of spray tanning.

The Concern Many People Don’t Talk About

There is another factor that influences the decision to use a booth, and people don’t always say it out loud.

A lot of people choose booths because they’re worried about someone seeing them naked. That concern is completely understandable. Being vulnerable in front of someone you've never met can feel uncomfortable, especially if you’re imagining the person spraying you is a perfectly toned twenty-something who lives on green smoothies and Pilates.

But the reality inside my spray tan room is very different.

I’m not a twenty-something Barbie type. I’m an older, curvier woman who is really good at making people feel comfortable as well as good at spray tanning. Real people come in all shapes, sizes, and ages and we embrace that at Bronze & Beyond.

And honestly, that’s part of why my clients feel comfortable.

More than once, someone has walked into the room, looked at me, and said something like, “Oh thank goodness.” Not in a mean way at all. What they meant was they were relieved the person spraying them looked like a normal, relatable human being.

I always laugh and tell them the same thing: I’m just a regular person who happens to do gorgeous spray tans.

When you do this job, you see skin all day long. Every body type. Every age. Every shape and size you can imagine. Nothing surprises me, and nothing is being judged. My brain is focused on things like blending around knees and elbows, getting even coverage and making sure I don't miss anything, and making sure the tan develops beautifully.

Once people realize that the room is completely judgment-free, the nerves usually disappear pretty quickly.

Most clients walk in feeling a little nervous.

They walk out realizing it was way easier, and way more comfortable, than they expected.

And they leave with a really good tan too.

Custom Spray Tans Allow Real-Time Precision

Another key difference is the ability to adjust during the service.

A booth follows its programmed spray cycle from start to finish. During a custom spray tan, I can evaluate the application as it happens.

If an area needs additional blending, I can blend it. If a spot needs more coverage, I can adjust it right away.

Those small refinements are what separate a basic spray tan from a great one.

The Difference Comes Down to Personalization

Booths are designed for efficiency. Custom spray tans are designed for people.

For mature skin, curvier bodies, and anyone who wants a tan that actually looks natural, technique matters more than automation.

When the application can be tailored to the person instead of a preset spray pattern, the final result is simply better.

And once someone experiences a custom spray tan, it becomes very clear why so many clients never go back to booths again.
